Indigenous Australian culture is flourishing today, as seen in the artist Archie Moore winning the Golden Lion award at the Venice Biennale. Indigenous novels are also garnering world attention. Alexis Wright’s Praiseworthy won the 2024 James Tait Black Award while Tony Birch’s The White Girl and Kim Scott’s That Deadman Dance have garnered world notice, including from American publishers. We will read Scott’s incident-laden tale of early European settlement and the role that whaling played in Indigenous culture, Wright’s family saga set in the politically rancorous Northern Territory of the 21st century, and Birch’s fast-moving thriller featuring multiple identities amid challenge  and resilience in modern times. Together, these three novels will provide moving portraits of a people who have repossessed their identity and culture.
