Donald McDonough, Lyric Poets in the Reigns of Elizabeth I and James I - Fully Registered

Tuesday, September 16, 2014 - 11:00 AM | For Members Only | Whitridge Room | See below for session information

Elizabethan and Stuart lyric poets, offering enigmas and paradoxes to untangle, always delight. They engage the enquiring mind whether the poet is a pirate, a priest, a playwright, or an MP. Raleigh, Herbert, Donne, Marvell, and Shakespeare argue the reader into bed or into heaven, prove to a queen that “silence is a suitor,” warn sons and mourn sons, and talk tough to God.

This seminar will survey the work of Sir Walter Raleigh, Andrew Marvell (left), George Herbert, Ben Jonson, and John Donne, and the sonnets of William Shakespeare. The poems for discussion are available for registrants.

Donald McDonough is a professor emeritus at Connecticut State University and has led popular Library seminars on Shakespeare, Milton, and many classical topics.

Tuesdays September 16, October 7, November 4, and December 2.

$50 for all four sessions (recommended); $15 per session.
