Elizabeth Winthrop

Elizabeth Winthrop is the author of more than 60 books for all ages. She is the winner of the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award and the Pen Syndicated Fiction Award. Her classic middle-grade novel, The Castle in the Attic and its sequel The Battle for the Castle have been nominated for 23 state book awards. Her most recent historical novel, Counting on Grace, was chosen as a Notable Book of the Year by the American Library Association, the National Council of Social Studies, the International Reading Association and the Childrenís Book Council among others.

Winthrop hails from a family of writers including the Alsop Brothers, Theodore Roosevelt and his cousin Franklin, the subject of her historical novel, Dear Mr. President. She shares how children can develop their own writing talent. "I always tell the kids that by the time you are twelve years old, you'll have all the memories you need to write a hundred books," she says. ìBuy a journal for yourself. Put down in it what happened to you and write how you felt about it.

Her picture books include Maia and the Monster Baby and Lucy and Henry are Twins.
