Summer Slide

Thursday, June 26, 2014

Have you heard about the Summer Slide? No, it's not the latest, greatest ride at Coney Island, but rather a label for the loss of learning that may occur during summer vacation if students do not use the skills they have developed all year long. While the children in your life may enjoy their extended break from the classroom, you can help prevent Summer Slide by encouraging them to read throughout the summer. Try these tips from our Children's Library staff and Reading Rockets to keep reading fun and engaging this summer:

  • Read aloud with your child often. Reading to younger children is the best way to build pre-literacy skills and to model fluent reading for emerging readers.
  • Let older children choose what they want to read, including popular fiction. Read the same books your children choose and discuss them.
  • Make reading fun by doing it at the beach or park. You can also choose books about favorite summertime activities like sports, gardening, and travel. Summer is a great time for kids to explore new subjects.
  • Listen to audiobooks in the car or at home with the entire family.
  • Subscribe to or borrow children's magazines. The Children's Library subscribes to many popular magazines, which you can explore here

 Summer Readers

We encourage you to visit the Children's Library often this summer. Our staff is always happy to recommend a good book.  You can also view our recommended reading lists, including our summertime selections. Have a wonderful summer, and happy reading!
