About the Library

Since 1754, the New York Society Library has played a central role in the evolution of the availability of books in New York City and the country.

We are an independent library and not-for-profit organization that serves a diverse community of readers, writers, and families.

Our first-floor reading room, exhibitions, and many events are open to the public. The Library also offers Day Passes.

Testimonials

“I'm somebody who's never been able to write at home. So I started coming here after school to write high school English papers. When I graduated from college I came home and I was taking writing classes and I still couldn't work at home, so I found my way back here and began writing plays here."—Wendy Wasserstein
